shinichi maruyama | action calligraphy paintings
It’s painting, sculpture, and photography in one. Liquid in sculptural form. A beautiful moment caught
on camera.
Today we’d like to share with you the art of Shinichi Maruyama. We don’t have a lot of details about his background, as his biography consists only of:
- 1968 Born in Nagano, Japan
- 1991 Graduated from Chiba University
- 2003 Moved to New York
This next image should give you a better idea of how he works, though.

The lighting in the photographs alone is amazing. Our question is, what does his camera set-up look like from where he’s sitting???
In the following examples, it’s as if each stroke of paint has a life of its own. Colors literally come to life, interacting with each other in vibrant, interesting ways. For fun, we’ve assigned each a title based on what we see. :)
Green Attacks Purple
Red Shark
Dali Paints Van Gogh
Ode to Jackson Pollock or Exploding Can of Sunkist
Waterfall and Spoon
