community website winner

20130313_communityWebsite_winner

We’re thrilled to announce the winner of our Community Website Giveaway :: Second Chance Dog Rescue!!! The organization was founded in 2008 by Sandra D. Simpson, Jason Cordoba and Maria Blake. They are dedicated to finding good homes for dogs throughout Southern California and Baja California, Mexico. The organization also provides medical care, including spay and neuter, and any necessary rehabilitation once a dog is brought in.

They also offer a foster system, where you can sign up to be a foster home for these rescued dogs until a permanent home can be found. They are always holding adoption events so look them up and maybe you’ll find your very own furry friend to bring home!

We’ve worked with Second Chance via the Dog Lovers Ministry, so we’re super excited to be a part of something near and dear to our hearts. Second Chance, we’ll be in touch with you next week about the next steps! CONGRATULATIONS and thank you for what you do!

THANK YOU to the other organizations that entered the contest, too! We’re very sorry we couldn’t accommodate everyone, but we’ll try to have another contest next year to help out another non-profit or group of volunteers. Keep in mind we also offer a big discount to non-profits, so you can always contact us for availability and a free proposal.

this month’s dog adoption results

San Diego Dog Adoption | Rock Church | Second Chance Dog Rescue

This past weekend, The Rock Church Dog Lovers Ministry put on two adoption events—one in Point Loma, one in North County—in an attempt to get as many animals out of the shelter as possible before Christmas. We’re happy to share that 21 dogs were adopted, clearing out an entire section at the Chula Vista Animal Facility!

If you’re still looking for a great pet, there are PLENTY more in need of a home! We spent the afternoon with dogs like Fidel (above) and Noah (below), two little guys that love nothing more than being fed treats or taken for a walk. Noah really caught our attention when he showed us he could sit, shake, and lay down. Every time I took out a treat I’d feel his little scruffy paw land on my leg. He’s just the cutest!

Noah | Second Chance Dog Rescue

Fidel and Noah are currently being fostered by Second Chance Animal Rescue. More info about them below!

Noah is a happy 2 year old Schnauzer Terrier mix that is about 20 lb. What a loving, shy, and sweet terrier guy!  He will put his head on your lap and become your best bud when he realizes you love him. Noah loves to talk to you when you show him affection and loves playing ball. He is that kind of scruffy and special dog that crawls into your heart and never leaves. He enjoys sitting at your feet, curled up next to you and feeling safe.  Noah gets along with other dogs and would be best in an home with adults.  He is such a wonderful gentleman who will reward your kindness with warmth and gratitude.

Noah is neutered, microchipped and up to date on his vaccinations.  His adoption fee is $200.

Fidel is a 1 year old Terrier mix that weighs 12 lbs.  Fidel is a great dog and gets along great with other dogs.  He is a young pup and has a lot of energy.  He is friendly with all people and kids.  He likes his play time but also enjoys cuddling or sitting on your lap.  Fidel will bark at other dogs at first but warms up quickly.  He is not completely house trained but he is working on it. This cutie would be a great addition to any family.

Fidel’s adoption fee is $175.00 – he is neutered, microchipped and up to date on his vaccinations.

Please go to our website, www.secondchancedogrescue.org to complete an application to meet the dogs! Or, if you’re interested in volunteering with us, check out the Dog Lovers Ministry!

PrepKitchen Del Mar reopens TOMORROW!

Prep Kitchen Del Mar

Last week, noise downstairs from the studio went from sawing and hammering to chatting and dish scraping. My first thought was, “PrepKitchen opened early!” I headed over there at lunch to place my order, only to have two people stare at me blankly when I asked if I could get something to go. Apparently, they were still in “practice mode” and weren’t officially open yet. BUT they let me place an order anyway…on the house. Wha?!! Not only do I get a delicious PK B.A.T., but I get it for FREEEE?!! Ah-mazing.

I’m going to have to start working out regularly now that PrepKitchen Del Mar opens TOMORROW.

This is for you, PK:

new artist-in-residence, Susan Graham, at the Lux Art Institute

Susan Graham at Lux Art Institute
Lawnmower and Derringer by Susan Graham, Courtesy of Lux Art Institute Website

Lux Art Institute is redefining the museum experience to make art more accessible and personally meaningful. At Lux, you don’t just see finished works of art; you see the artistic process firsthand, engaging with internationally recognized artists in a working studio environment. (Lux Art Institute, Mission Statement)

Have you ever gone to a museum and looked at a piece of art and wondered, “How did they make that?” At the Lux Art Institute in beautiful Encinitas, CA, you can find out just how that piece of art you saw in a magazine once, was created. The Institute brings in artists-in-residence to live, create and inspire. The artists work on new projects while the community is given the opportunity to view this unique process. The upcoming artist-in-residence is Ohio native Susan Graham. Her sculpture and installation pieces have been shown internationally and when asked about her work she has said:

My sculptures and installations use repetitive acts or actions–often resulting in the making of a multitude of similar objects–and are linked to a particular psychological state. The materials I use, such as sugar and porcelain, give the pieces a feeling of domesticity or sweetness, while the subjects are ones that make me uncomfortable.

Susan Graham will be in the studio from September 13-October 6. For more information about Graham and Lux Art Institute, click here! Enjoy!

16 dogs adopted at The Rock

The Rock Dog Adoption

GREAT NEWS…16 dogs were adopted at The Rock dog adoption event this past Sunday! We are SO happy for all of the wonderful dogs that found loving homes, and grateful for the people who gave them a chance.

The number of church attendees who signed up to either volunteer at future adoptions OR foster a shelter dog was incredible. The fact that we had to scramble to find people pens and answer people’s questions was an inspiring way to end a crazy weekend. :)

For more info about The Dog Lovers Ministry, click HERE! We post dog-related volunteer opportunities on a regular basis, so be sure to check back at the beginning of each month for more info.

puerto angel needs your help

Puerto Angel Hurricane Relief

After a week of visiting San Diego, my friend Lisa and her daughter Isabela went home to Mexico to find their small town in shambles. Just a day before they caught a flight back, Hurricane Carlotta hit the coast and wreaked havoc on what was already a poor area. It’s crazy that we had JUST been laughing about how Isabela called the ribbon wand I gave her a “fishing pole.” I remember Lisa’s response was, “Can you tell she’s from a fishing town?!”

From what I had seen in pictures, the beautiful, quaint community was filled with smiling neighbors, sandy beaches, and barefoot kids…the kind of place where life moves at a different pace and everyone who lives there knows how to appreciate life. Now, it’s a flooded, broken mess. Please take a minute to read Lisa’s message below and help her in the effort of rebuilding her town!

Hurricane Carlotta affected tens of thousands of people here along the southern Pacific coast of Mexico last Friday, June 15, 2012. Nearly every single community along the hurricane’s path was already poverty stricken – by Mexican standards. Most of the damage was done as a result of roofs being ripped from homes and the insides of homes being flooded. Things most of us take for granted like clot…hing and mattresses, furniture, pots and pans, things you and I are able to replace with relative ease were destroyed and cannot be afforded. Government help has started to arrive in the form of free asbestos sheets to build new roofs.

The economy in Puerto Angel revolves around fishing, and many boats were lost to the storm. Boats parked on the shore were ripped from their moors and dragged into the ocean to sink. A few miles inland from us, people depend on their crops: mango, papaya, lime, melon, watermelon, corn, and higher in the nearby mountains coffee, to name only a few. Fields were destroyed and from where we are on the coast to high in the Sierra Madre next door, thousands of trees were ripped from their roots.

It seems unlikely we’d be able to raise enough money to help everyone affected by hurricane Carlotta, but we are making this effort to help our most immediate neighbors first, and then working concentrically around us. Our neighbors in Barrio del Sol, Puerto Angel, Oaxaca will be the initial focus. First, damage will be assessed home by home; then, families will be asked to fill out an “application” of sorts estimating the damage and what materials are needed to rebuild their home. All aid will be distributed on a strictly need-based scale.

We are asking our family and friends to help if they can, and if the effort grows, we will expand the relief to include all of Puerto Angel, and if it is possible, our neighboring towns of Zipolite, San Agustinillo, Mazunte, and Ventanilla, as well. We will post before, during, and after photos on this page so that all those who helped can see the difference they have made. For those who cannot make donations, positive vibes, smiles, posts, pictures, and love go a long way to help too! And of course, please share the page and ask everyone in the universe you know to like and share the page.

This effort will be managed entirely by myself, Lisa Wright and my husband, Marcos Lopez (with help from Isabela, of course). Our dear friend Philip Rosenberg inspired this effort, as well, and will manage a portion of it from Brooklyn, New York, donating services from his marketing firm Kensington Media (facebook.com/kensingtonmedia). Thank you Phil!!!
