I’m writing today with BIG news… my work is being featured in one of my favorite print projects of all time: the annual Mr Cup Letterpress Calendar! I’ve been purchasing this calendar on Kickstarter since 2015, and if you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen me post a flat lay here and there of some of my favorite pages. I honestly never dreamed of being a PART of the calendar, but I am here to tell you that anything is possible when you’re truly passionate about it. :)Read More
When I was introduced to people as a child, I’d hide behind my mom and say, “Hi” in a barely-there whisper. Then my mom would say, “Oh, she’s just shy” and give me a mild scolding about how I should speak up. Though I never admitted it out loud, I hated being called “shy.” But…why? Why did it bother me so much? Why did this straight-up offend me as a child? Now that I’m in my mid thirties, I have a much better understanding of it all. Being called “shy” made me feel incapable and, worse, misunderstood.Read More

Before we dive into HOW and WHEN to brand your business, it’s imperative we ask ourselves :: What, exactly, is branding?
Branding is, in one word, your reputation. It’s the unspoken introduction to your product or service. You won’t always be around to pitch to potential customers, so it’s important your branding makes the BEST first impression possible.
Seth Godin writes, “A brand is the set of expectations, memories, stories, and relationships that, taken together, account for a consumer’s decision to choose one product or service over another.”
Yep. Highlight that part about accounting for a “consumer’s decision to choose one product or service over another.” THIS is why you need to care about branding. Without effective branding, people won’t know what you’re selling or why it’s worth their time or money.
Denise Lee Yohn gives us a simple equation that we’ll explore below…Read More

What?! Two posts in one day? YES. I opened my inbox to see I was part of not one, but TWO, features today. VoyageHouston was kind enough to include me in their series called “The Thought-Provokers: Celebrating Artists and Creatives.” If you’re new here and you’d like to hear more about what I do, how I came to do it, and how creatives can set each other up for success, please have a read!
BTW / At the end of my interview, I was asked to refer VoyageHouston to at least 5 other Houston creatives who inspire me, which made me realize someone else must have given them my name. I have no idea who it was, but that is such a compliment! Thank you, anonymous friend!
Photo and Styling by Nikki Tripp of Tripp Films
This spring, I had the absolute pleasure of working with Nikki Tripp of Tripp Films to rebrand her Houston-based creative film business. Today, she is sharing a Q&A session she did with me, and I couldn’t be more grateful! While I wish I had more time to post about recent projects like this, it means even more to me when clients share their experiences on their own.

After you’re done, hire Tripp Films to make you a branded film. I guarantee you will not regret it.
More to come on this amazing project, I promise!
Summer is a busy time for families, but for me, it's when work finally slows down. Since my schedule is a bit less hectic, I thought I'd start a little Instagram DESIGN CHALLENGE for my creative friends. Think of it as a way to take a break, get inspired, and make something just for FUN. No hard rules, no client feedback, and no pressure. Sound good?
Here's how it works:
- This challenge will last 4 weeks, with 1 project to work on per week.
- Every Monday, I'll post a random, punny business name for which YOU will design a logo.
You'll have from Monday to Sunday to create and post your masterpiece, then we'll move on to the next design.
- There are NO design rules other than "Don't intentionally copy anyone else's work."
- When you're done, post it to your Instagram account and use hashtag #logosarepun so we can all ooh and ahh. Please support each other by liking, commenting, and, if requested, providing a short critique.
- All skill levels are welcome. You can be an aspiring graphic designer, a student, a professional of 20 years, a calligrapher, a crafter, or even a photographer.
Here's an example:
Business Name :: BUN INTENDED
Type of Business :: a modern burger joint
IG Hashtags :: #logosarepun #logosarepunweek0
Deadline :: n/a
Here, I made a little mock-up of my logo design. It features half a burger for the B. Watch my IG stories in the coming week and I'll try to post my brainstorming process video. It's a total mess but it will give you an idea of how I came up with this. My IG handle is @akulakreative.
