Here's a sneak peek at the logo development process for the Big & Little! Please note that the animated .GIF below shows screen shots of the major steps—not all of the detail work in between—for ONE concept.
I always begin the process by doodling. (The paper on the left is actually the back of an opened envelope. You never know when inspiration will hit!) If you "read" this from top to bottom, left to right, you might notice the progression.
If you're prepping for your branding project, keep in mind that your doodles don't have to perfect. (Mine are far from it.) Sketching exercises are meant to spark an idea, not serve as a final draft.
I normally don't have an ah-HA! moment this quickly, but inspiration was on my side last night and I landed on my first concept within 2 sheets.
After I was happy with the doodle, I took a photo of it. (Most of the time, I do a hi-res scan, but this drawing was simple enough that a photo sufficed.) I also took a photo of Nani's silhouette so I could make the dog more realistic. Next, I mapped out the shape using circles (as you would when you're drawing figures). The most time-consuming part of the process was drawing the actual mark using the pen tool in Illustrator. Once I finalized the lines, I played around with the stroke to add the finishing touches.
Note :: I normally can't share the early stages of a branding project but this one is for me! The Big & Little Ranch is where I plan to put ALL of the profits of Akula Kreative. My goal is to one day—with the help of my family—build a short- and long-term sanctuary for dogs in need of homes, whether they're in line to be euthanized or waiting for their military families to return home.
UPDATE as of 4.9.15 :: We have a landing page for The Big & Little!
