Why a Simple Quiz Might Be the Smartest Lead Generator on Your Website

You know what I miss from the 90s? Magazine quizzes. (Do you remember these?? Did you ever do them?)

The quiz was always the first thing my friends and I would flip to (after maybe the horoscope on the back page). Topics included everything from “Is He Into You?” to “Who’s Your Style Icon?” - and though they were silly and meaningless, we couldn’t get enough of them. I’m not sure if it was the joy of playing a simple game, or the genuine hope of gaining insight into our lives, but we LOVED them…and I miss them.

I’ll admit that I don’t remember the last time I opened a print magazine, but I have been wanting to add a quiz to my website for months (maybe even years).

In addition to bringing back the fun and nostalgia, a quiz turns a passive scroll into a personalized, interactive experience. It invites your potential client into your process. And, if done well, it quietly gathers the exact information you need - before you’ve even connected.

I was recently given the opportunity to test a platform called Interact, and it made me rethink what a website can do (beyond presenting your work and introducing your services).

why quizzes work

especially in the luxury home space

Hiring a designer, builder, or architect is a big decision. Most clients don’t fully understand their own preferences yet—they just know they want something beautiful, functional, and “them.”

A quiz helps bridge that gap.

It:

  • guides clients through their own tastes and priorities

  • positions you as thoughtful and process-driven

  • creates a sense of personalization before the first call

And yes, it captures their email so you can continue the conversation.

it’s not just a lead magnet. it’s a filter.

The best part? A quiz doesn’t just bring in more leads. It brings in better ones.

Imagine a potential client landing on your site and taking a 2-minute quiz that tells you:

  • their preferred aesthetic (even if they couldn’t give it a name)

  • their project scope

  • their timeline

  • their budget range

By the time they hit “submit,” you already know if they’re a great fit.

No back-and-forth. No skipping the budget question. Just useful information that you may not have been able to gather via a standard intake form.

“but how complicated is this to set up?”

Interact was shockingly user-friendly. I dove in head first, without reading a single guide or tutorial. Why? Well, 1) I was in a rush, and 2) I wanted to see for myself how intuitive it was for someone creating a quiz for the first time. I’m happy to report that I only had to google ONE question during the setup process: “Does Interact support custom fonts?” (Spoiler alert: it does not. But no sweat - I just chose something close to what I use and called it a day.)

With a platform like Interact, you can:

  • Build a quiz in a few hours (or a weekend, if client work is heavy right now)

  • Choose from templates or start from scratch

  • Create personality-style results, scoring systems (to test someone’s knowledge), or simple recommendations

  • Connect it directly to your email platform (like Flodesk)

Once it’s live, it runs quietly in the background…capturing leads, segmenting your audience, and giving potential clients a reason to stay on your site longer.

quiz ideas for designers, builders, and architects

If your wheels are turning, here are a few directions you could take:

For Interior Designers

  • What’s Your Design Personality? (to better understand a client’s tastes and preferences)

  • Is Your Home Ready for a Designer?

  • Which Room Should You Renovate First?

For Builders

  • What Kind of Custom Home Fits Your Lifestyle?

  • Are You Ready to Build Your Dream Home?

  • What’s Your Homebuilding Style: Modern, Traditional, or Somewhere In Between?

For Architects

  • What Architectural Style Matches Your Vision?

  • How Do You Want Your Home to Feel?

  • What’s Your Ideal Floor Plan Personality?

For Any of the Above

  • What’s Your Project Personality? (hands-on vs. hands-off, fast-paced vs. detail-oriented)

  • What’s Your Investment Comfort Level?

  • What’s Standing Between You and Your Dream Home?

Each result can lead to a tailored next step—whether that’s booking a consultation, downloading a guide, or slowly building a relationship through your newsletter or email list.

Side note :: Interact does a great job providing guides, examples, case studies, and AI tools for those needing help getting started. I personally didn’t take advantage of these because I already knew what kind of quiz I wanted to create, but I wanted you to know that there’s support available if you need it.

the bigger picture

A quiz isn’t just a “fun extra” (even though I, personally, would be ok with that).

It’s a strategic layer of your website - one that works 24/7 to:

  • start conversations

  • pre-qualify leads

  • make your brand feel more personal

And, when it’s integrated seamlessly into a well-designed website, its potential is even greater. A quiz like this doesn’t just live on your site…it becomes part of your brand experience.

If you’ve been thinking about refreshing your website, this might be the perfect opportunity to make it work a little harder for you.

a quick example

to show how this could actually work:

Let’s say you’re an interior designer who specializes in full-service projects.

Instead of sending every inquiry through a generic contact form, you create a short quiz using Interact called:

“What’s Your Design Personality?”

It asks thoughtful, strategic questions like:

  • How do you want your home to feel at the end of this project?

  • Which spaces are you most focused on right now?

  • What’s your ideal level of involvement in the process?

  • When are you hoping to get started?

At the end, each person gets a tailored result. Something like:

  • The Refined Minimalist

  • The Layered Collector

  • The Warm Modernist

But here’s where it becomes more than just “fun.”

Each result page:

  • reflects their answers back to them (so they feel seen and understood)

  • shows a few relevant portfolio examples (this would be next-level!)

  • gently positions your process as the solution

  • invites them to take the next step (inquire, book a call, or download a guide)

Before they can view their result, they enter their email…which flows directly into your list through Flodesk.

From there, you can:

  • send a tailored email sequence based on their result

  • speak directly to their preferences and priorities

  • continue building trust before you ever get on a call

Meanwhile, on your end…

You’re not just getting a name and email; you’re getting context.

So when someone does reach out, you already know:

  • what they’re drawn to

  • what they care about

  • whether they’re aligned with your process

Offering a more tailored experience like this is absolutely essential to building trust and standing out. Instead of starting from scratch, you can skip the sales pitch and get straight to signing. Huzzah!
