the art of jeeyoung lee

The work of JeeYoung Lee seems to be everywhere this week: the Huffington Post UK, Business Insider, Bored Panda, MyModernMet... If you check out the photos below, you'll quickly understand why. JeeYoung first transforms her tiny studio into beautiful, dramatic, imaginative realms...then photographs herself in them to create self portraits. The results are, in one word, magical. As someone who works in two dimensions on a daily basis, seeing art come alive like this is a breath of fresh air. So inspiring!

Shinichi Maruyama [pinit]

It's painting, sculpture, and photography in one. Liquid in sculptural form. A beautiful moment caught on camera.

Today we'd like to share with you the art of Shinichi Maruyama. We don't have a lot of details about his background, as his biography consists only of:

  • 1968 Born in Nagano, Japan
  • 1991 Graduated from Chiba University
  • 2003 Moved to New York

This next image should give you a better idea of how he works, though. (Click on any of these images to see larger versions.)

The lighting in the photographs alone is amazing. Our question is, what does his camera set-up look like from where he's sitting???

In the following examples, it's as if each stroke of paint has a life of its own. Colors literally come to life, interacting with each other in vibrant, interesting ways. For fun, we've assigned each a title based on what we see. :)
