a surf-stationery-inspired color palette

mood board filled with surf-themed stationery

Technically, I worked backwards this week, starting with a color palette then creating a mood board mock-up based on the colors. The surfboard, flip flop, and monstera leaf illustrations were actually taken from Aloha Cafe’s branding (which you can find here). I stiil love that project so much!

After creating this bright, surf-inspired mix, I was immediately reminded of this color palette I made based on a completely different image. Both are playful, but this one is brighter. Once I realized how similar the colors were, I tweaked the top shade to be more blue than green and juiced up the yellow to feel less retro. Now that you’ve seen both…which do you prefer? Do you agree that this one feels more summery?

If you found the styling inspo I provided last week to be helpful, below is a digital illustration my 6 year-old made using the above color palette before I tweaked it.

I’ve been trying to teach her how the details are what make illustrations extra special, and that tiny black valve is my faaaave. (I accidentally erased the plastic loop that attaches the valve to the float, and she was NOT happy about it. Don’t worry - I added it back in.)

Hope you enjoyed this week’s art. :)

Happy Friday!

You can now download a free printable PDF of this color palette that includes values for print (CMYK) and web (HEX, RGB, HSL) - as well as the closest Pantone matches for coated and uncoated stock! It’s everything you need to recreate this color combo on your own.
